Port Royal’s Recovery and Award Recognition
When Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Port Aransas, many Port Royal employees wondered whether they would have a job to return to. Our property was devastated, and it would take months to recover and reopen. But Port Royal did not lay off employees. Instead, we took this time as on opportunity to invest in our employees and our community.
Port Royal gave employees the time they needed to recover their own homes, then sent them out to serve the community. We partnered with Habitat for Humanity, the Food Bank, Dress for Success, Salvation Army, and many other local organizations to contribute thousands of volunteer hours to the Coastal Bend community. In addition, we created Port Royal University, designed to train employees on personal and team excellence so that when we did finally reopen, our team would be better than ever.
Port Royal was recognized for these incredible efforts at this year’s Texas Workforce Solutions Awards Luncheon, where our General Manager, Kendra Kinnison, accepted the Local Employer of Excellence award on behalf of the Port Royal Strong team. We are proud of the amazing work we’ve accomplished this year – both on our property and in our community.

One concept we learned in Port Royal University was “Event + Response = Outcome.” Although we don’t always have control over the event, we do control our response to that event, thus determining our outcome in the situation. For us, the hurricane became an opportunity to respond to a community in need as we rebuilt our own property. We came together to create a better outcome for our team and our community, and became are a stronger, more resilient team in the process.
